Off-grid cabins NZ, built for remote sites.
Prefab off-grid cabins and tiny homes from 18m² to 70m², built in Motueka and delivered across New Zealand. Live in it while you build, then keep it as a granny flat. We help you plan the site, the systems and the council paperwork.
Solar power for an off-grid cabin.
Going off the grid in NZ usually starts with power. Most off-grid cabins run on solar panels, a battery bank and an inverter, sized to how much electricity you really use. Some owners add a generator as backup for long, dull winter spells.
Our cabins are built to connect to your own power system instead of the grid. Tell us how you plan to use the cabin and we will talk through what suits your site.

Rainwater harvesting for your cabin.
With no town supply, most off-grid cabins collect rain from the roof into storage tanks. How big the tank needs to be depends on your roof area, your local rainfall and how many people will live there.
Rainwater for drinking should be filtered and treated first. A good setup also includes a bore, stream or carted water as a backup for dry spells.

Septic tanks and composting toilets.
Without a council sewer connection, your cabin needs its own wastewater system. The usual choices are a septic tank with a disposal field, an aerated wastewater treatment system, or a composting toilet for toilet waste.
What is allowed depends on your soil, your section and your council, and most onsite wastewater systems need council approval. Check this early, before you order, as it shapes the whole project.

Everything else that makes a self-sufficient cabin work.
A few more things are worth planning before the cabin arrives. Heating and cooking can run on a wood burner, a heat pump powered by your solar, or gas bottles. For internet, many remote owners use satellite or rural wireless.
Access matters just as much. Delivery needs a track that a truck can use and room to place the cabin, so tell us about your site early and we will plan delivery and placement with you.

Questions,
answered.
The questions we hear most from people planning to go off-grid. General information only, so please check the details with your council. Can’t find what you’re after? Give us a call or send an enquiry.
View all FAQsYes. We build prefab cabins in Motueka that can be set up off the grid. The cabin is built to connect to your own power, water and wastewater systems, and we can talk through what suits your site.
It means you are not connected to town power, water or sewer. You generate your own power (usually solar), collect your own water (usually rainwater) and treat your own wastewater on site.
Most people plan for solar power with a battery, a rainwater tank and treatment, a wastewater system such as a septic tank, a heating and cooking option, and access for delivery. Tell us about your site and we will talk you through it.
We supply the cabin. Off-grid systems depend on your site, so ask us what we can help arrange and what you would organise separately. Either way, we help you plan so you know the full cost before you commit.
Many of our customers do. Building consent and council rules still apply, so check what your council requires for living on site during a build.
Yes. Once your main house is finished, the cabin can become a granny flat, guest cabin or home office. Granny flats up to 70m² have simpler consent rules from January 2026, and councils apply them differently, so check with yours.
Often yes, but it depends on the size, how it will be used and your council. Wastewater systems usually need council approval too. We help with the council paperwork, so tell us about your site.
No. Our cabins are built in a workshop and, in almost all cases, fixed to foundations on your property. Sizes run from 18m² to 70m².
Yes. We deliver across New Zealand with insured transport, and we plan site access and placement with you. A truck needs a usable track and room to place the cabin, so tell us about your access early.
Most of our projects take around 12 to 14 weeks from deposit to delivery. Your site work and off-grid systems can be organised while the cabin is built.
